One of my favorite songs greeted me a couple of hours after I opened my eyes this morning. As I strummed my air guitar to Switchfoot’s “Meant to Live”, I couldn’t resist smiling. After expressing my thankfulness for another day, a single question leaped out from beyond my crowded thoughts to demand acknowledgement. Are you living or existing?I have not answered the question yet. While I do know there have been periods in my life where I have lived, it is unclear to me whether I am in this present moment. I understand some will read this with some degree of perplexity because for a lot of people, living and existing are one in the same. I disagree.
While technically, we are in existence because we are living organisms, beings, etc. Relatively, there are distinct differences. We all exist, following are daily routines, going about life on autopilot. When we live, we soar. Which would you prefer? Life in 16- or 256-color? That’s the difference. To live is to explore the world around you. Living gives us license to (within reason) throw caution to the wind and allow ourselves to be a little reckless.
Steve Marboli said, “When you are just EXISTING, life happens to you… and you manage; when you are truly LIVING, you happen to life… and you lead.”
We all have the power to direct the course of our lives but first, we must become active participants.
“We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside, Somewhere we live inside.” ~Switchfoot
